[Under Construction]

Instructor

I'm glad you're interested in the Theology Program. My goal is to make the classes stimulating and thought provoking. At the same time, my desire is to go beyond the academic and the hatching of mere theory. We need to put what we learn into practice. Specifically, we need to translate worldview into mission. We need to deploy disciples into the harvest. So, as we learn, let's intend to engage the culture meaningfully and dynamically. The meaningfully part can be explained in terms of our reason being stimulated with increased knowledge. The dynamic involved in engaging the culture is a byproduct of the presence of the risen Lord Jesus at work in and through each of us by the power of the Holy Spirit. The culture is searching for what is real. We have the truth. The truth is a dynamic force represented in an active kingdom through the people of God. These classes are dedicated to empowering such people with the tools necessary to possess a biblical foundation for doing mission. By all means come and join us.

The Theology Program seeks to give people who may never have the call to full-time seminary an opportunity to take part in the same type of theological education. We are committed to the Reformation principle that the study of the Bible and theology is a right, privilege, and duty for everyone, not just the clergy. All of our classes are designed with the understanding that people have families and full-time jobs that demand their attention. We also understand that believers have a strong desire to come to know their God at a deep level. We believe that the way to do this is through commitment to a study of the Bible and theology. Our program seeks to fill this great thirst that we all have.

The Theology Program (TTP) is a program of Christian theology (study of God) and apologetics (defending the faith) created with all believers in mind. TTP seeks to give people who may never have the time, ability, or circumstances that allow them to attend full-time seminary the same opportunity to study the great and rich Christian heritage of truth. Here, you will learn theology historically, biblically, and irenically (in a peaceful manner). The contents of TTP are created from a broadly evangelical perspective, engaging other traditions in a persuasive yet gracious manner. In short, we seek to help people think theologically by understanding what they believe and why they believe it.

Introduction to Theology Course (Example)

This is a theological studies methods course. Its primary purpose is to teach you skills for developing a Christian mind, by helping you construct a solid foundation for thinking through life's most important issues. We will begin by establishing the reality and nature of truth and then learn that rightly interpreted Scripture is the final arbiter of truth. You will learn the about various sources for theology and the way that different people use and misuse these sources. This course endeavors to enable people to think theologically and construct a biblical worldview that makes the Christian's witness relevant to all people in need. This course is a prerequisite to all other required courses of theology.

Review of the Book

Dr. Grudem became Research Professor of Bible and Theology in 2001, after teaching at Trinity Evangelical
Divinity School for 20 years. He has served as president of the Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, as
president of the Evangelical Theological Society (1999), and as a member of the Translation Oversight Committee for the English Standard Version of the Bible. He has written more than 60 articles for both popular and academic journals, and his books include: Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine, The Gift of Prophecy in the New Testament and Today, and The First Epistle of Peter (TNTC) and Business for the Glory of God. He has also co-edited Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A response to Evangelical Feminism and edited Are Miraculous Gifts for Today? Four Views.

Roger E. Olson (Ph.D., Rice University) is professor of theology at George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He is the author of The Story of Christian Theology: Twenty Centuries of Tradition & Reform (IVP), The Mosaic of Christian Belief: Twenty Centuries of Unity and Diversity (IVP), and The Westminster Handbook to Evangelical Theology (Westminster John Knox). He is also coauthor of 20th-Century Theology: God & the World in a Transitional Age and Who Needs Theology? An Invitation to the Study of God (both with Stanley J. Grenz, IVP), and of The Trinity (with Christopher A. Hall, Eerdmans).

"You don't have to be a 'paid theologian' to understand Roger Olson's presentation of Christian theology. Without jargon but with an irenic spirit, Roger helps the educated layperson of any church persuasion to understand what is essential to believe in order to still be tethered to the Christian faith and what beliefs have broken the tether in the church's past. This book helps us to appreciate all the diverse theological colors that make up the mosaic called 'the Christian faith' while showing us where and why certain beliefs don't fit the pattern. Anyone who has been scared off by terms like theology, doctrine and orthodoxy will learn from Roger that these words and the Christian content that fills them are our friends."

Pastor Michael Patton is the Director and primary teacher of this excellent 7-Part Course. Pastor Rhome Dyck joins Michael as the other teacher of the Theology Program. Both pastors are seminary trained and excellent teachers. The program materials they have created are of the highest quality.

Each of these men are on the pastoral staff at Stonebriar Community Church where Church Swindoll is the Senior Pastor.

Chuck Swindoll is the founding pastor of Stonebriar Community Church. His desire is to establish the church with a solid biblical foundation based on the faithful exposition of the Word of God. His vision includes the importance of corporate worship and an emphasis on small-group ministries that provide encouragement and accountability in the body. His missionary passion is to train men and women for ministry worldwide while meeting the spiritual needs of the local community.

Chuck currently also serves as Chancellor of Dallas Theological Seminary and is the Bible teacher of the worldwide radio ministry, "Insight for Living," and has published numerous books dealing with all aspects of Christian life. He served as senior pastor of a Fullerton, California, church for 23 years prior to moving back to Texas.

Michael Patton oversees the Single Adult Ministries at SCC, which includes several fellowships on Sunday morning for various age groups. Each of the fellowships also have weekday Bible studies and social activities. Michael is also Director of The Theology Program at Stonebriar, an academic study program for lay people. In this capacity he oversees the enrollment, curriculum, and teaching staff for the program. Michael graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with honors in 2001.
As Resident Pastor of Adult Fellowships, Rhome's primary responsibility is to provide leadership and support to the leaders and teachers of SCC's adult fellowships. Another aspect of his role is to serve as a liaison between the adult fellowships and the leadership of Stonebriar's other ministries. Rhome is also a teacher in The Theology Program and says that his greatest passion is helping people gain a firmer grasp on the truth of Scripture. Rhome earned a diploma in biblical studies from Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C., Canada; a bachelor of arts degree in history from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., Canada; and in May of this year, he received a master of theology degree in historical theology from Dallas Theological Seminary.
